To start, all zoos more or less are similar. However Asahiyama zoo has a really great variety of animals that seem to be happy and well kept. Coming from overseas, this place is above the rest of the zoos and is English friendly. The food is pretty great too, get the deer cutlet if possible and some ice cream. Would say it's definitely worth a stop if you are from overseas in Hokkaido.

It's a nice zoo, animals look well kept and relaxed. Finally met brown bears here, one of them was huge and so close! Wow! The spot with wolves looks very natural, very much like wild nature. We arrived 1,5 hour before closing, but we managed to watch everything we wanted. I liked how the zoo territory is planned. You don't need to waste time and energy on long walks between the animal houses. We met a big snake on the road, so be careful while walking.

Been 9 years since our last visit and the zoo has transformed. The exhibits are so informative in both English and Japanese and the animals all look so happy on their habitats. Truly enjoyed the polar bear, seal and penguin exhibits!

Amazing zoo with healthy animals! The rhino seemed to enjoy swimming gracefully with people watching. The polar bear seemed quite hot but was very strong and healthy. The enclosures allow you to get close to the animals safely. Only the giraffe seemed a bit sad as his area was quite small and was there alone.

This zoo is under rated. Though it was raining when we entered, the animals are still out. The enclosures were able to provide a close-up view of the animals. Children’s farm also allowed patting of small animals like goats. The highlight was the penguin section which has a special glass tube that you can view the penguins swimming all around. Planned for a trip of max 2hrs but spent 4+hrs there. Highly recommended for a day trip with kids!
