When I hear Hakkoda, I think of an incident over 100 years ago where a Japanese soldiers were lost during a march through the snow. I don't know the details, but I heard there is a statue commemorating that incident, so I went to see it. It was a place where no one seemed to be around, but a guide was there and explained things to me. We had a great conversation and he also told me about some great scenic spots nearby. Thank you for helping me out in the heat. Be careful of heat stroke and bears.

It could be a long drive(and hike) to get there, but on a clear day, you will get the best photo with the mountains in the back.

After going to Sukayu Onsen, I went there at the request of my companion as it is a place related to the movie ``Hakkoda Mountains''. Google Maps also shows a route to walk from the middle of the road, but I think it's safe to go from Bronze Chaya. Although it was the time of the Nebuta Festival, there were hardly any tourists, so I was able to watch it in peace.

This is an actual snow marching accident in Mt. Hakkoda during the Meiji period. A bronze statue of Corporal Goto, who was the first to be discovered during the search, has been erected.

I toured Corporal Goto's bronze statue, the first campsite, the second campsite, and the place where Corporal Goto was discovered. The parking lot side of the bronze statue teahouse is the horse stand, Narusawa second camp is right next to it, and Hirasawa first camp is further away than I expected. I looked at the east side of the second camp from where the statue was, and it was quite steep. After turning back at the Komagome River, it is no wonder that they were unable to climb the cliff after being hungry, staying up all night, and experiencing the bitter cold. A dam is currently being built on the Komagome River, indicating that the terrain is narrow. As you head toward Aomori City, you'll be descending with repeated gentle curves, and there will be more elevation changes than you expected. Various causes have been suggested, including drastic changes in weather, lack of guidance on the geography, inadequate cold-weather equipment, a mistake in making the decision to turn back, and a lack of experience in piloting, but I felt that the topography was also a contributing factor.
