To really enjoy this attraction you need to do a bit of research. Prior to the Battle of Okinawa and hundreds of years ago, this was the Ryukyu Dynasty. Much of the history, customs and folklore of the Ryukyu Islands is found in nooks and crannies, such as this site. It's a bit of a hike outside the Shuri castle grounds to a location off-the-beaten path. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, as the stone pavement can be rough and slippery at times. The Big Akagi Tree is sort of a misnomer, as there are 6 of these special trees in the sacred site. I read in another review, that a gal recommended mosquito protection. She visited during January. It's true, the mosquitoes attacked me yesterday, during the month of October. Located among the grove of trees is a small cave associated with the legend of "Onimuchii" which, you may want to research before entering this sacred, historical area. The location may be suitable for strollers, with healthy parents pushing them but, is not wheelchair friendly.

Big big big big big tree. This tree is estimated to be over 200 years old. You feel power of the tree because this tree survived the devastating war in Okinawa.

1/2023 (early evening) So quiet you could hear a drop of water fall to the ground… (Wasn’t sure which was “the” tree, but that’s ok)
