Natsume Soseki Former Residence, in Kumamoto, exhibits certain publications of Natsume Soseki [1867-1916], the famous Japanese writer, poet, and commentor, when he lived in Kumamoto and was a high school teacher between 1896 and 1900. It also explored the relations between Natsume Soseki and Kumamoto and how Natsume Soseki was affected by his living in Kumamoto, etc. The Residence is well maintained, clean, and is free of admission for entrance.

It is a valuable facility where you can receive explanations from the manager and enter both the building and the garden for free. There was also information on other Natsume Soseki residences in Kumamoto City. This is the only place where buildings from that time still remain. The Western-style room has a high ceiling and is comfortable. However, I think the winters were cold at that time. The door in the Western-style room is wide and its usability is questionable.

It was renovated after the Kumamoto Earthquake and is open for free for the time being. You can have a look inside as you like after the staff explains it to you. You can basically take pictures, but please note that there are some rooms where you cannot take pictures! Natsume Soseki moved six times during his four and a half years in Kumamoto. This is Tsuboi's former residence, which is said to be the favorite of his wife Kyoko. The Western-style atmosphere of the reading space and the view of the garden from the 8-tatami room that is used as a study are the best.
