Misogi Pond

Beautiful park in quiet pine forest. A Lily pond and hydrangea walk are so nice to see. Walking paths are quite nice.

Visited on 5/30/2024. It is said that Izanagi no Mikoto purified the impurity of the underworld in this pond, and the gods were born there. Befitting such a myth, it was a very beautiful place with yellow water lilies blooming at this time of year. You can also see well-grown turtles in the pond. It's tempting to take a peek, but the water is deep and there are muddy areas around, so children and the elderly should be especially careful. There were people taking pictures while walking around the pond, and since it was a weekday, I was able to take my time to look around. It was a pleasant place and before I knew it, I had circled the pond twice. I would like to come and see it again next year.

This pond appears in a very famous myth, where Izanagi no Mikoto purified her body when she returned from the land of the underworld, and gave rise to Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Sushoson. You can get there by parking your car at Eda Shrine and walking towards it. We walked through a lot of grass, and the pond itself was grassy and there were quite a few insects. Miike is very beautiful.

I visited Eda Shrine in mid-September and followed the directions. It was raining in the morning and I thought it would be cool on the path surrounded by trees. It was very hot and humid. I couldn't see the lotus flowers at Misogi Pond. There were still some buds, so I think I'll be able to see them in the morning.

Izanami no Mikoto died from the burns she sustained when she gave birth to the god of fire. Her husband, Izanagi no Mikoto, mourned the loss of his wife and went to the land of the dead, the land of the dead, to meet her. However, Izanagi-no-Mikoto has completely changed into a terrifying figure, and seeing this, Izanagi-no-Mikoto returns to earth and blocks the entrance to the land of hell. Then, in order to remove the impurity of the underworld, he bathed in a pond to purify himself. It is said that this pond is called ``Misogiike''. (according to local signage). The Kojiki records that during this misogi, when Izanagi-no-Mikoto washed her left eye, Amaterasu Omikami was born, when she washed her right eye, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto was born, and when she washed her nose, Suho-no-kami was born. .
