Izunuma

Izunuma is a freshwater lake supporting fringing peat swamps, reedbeds and submerged vegetation. It’s a protected Ramsar Site since 1985 and an important bird location. They have a boat tours and an excellent visitor center with lots of materials on the area both in Japanese and English.

Every winter time about 2000-3000 of wild birds (mostly swan)came to Izunuma from somewhere in north country of earth. Beautiful movement.

It is the largest freshwater lake in the prefecture and is protected as a wetland registered under the Ramsar Convention. ️ There is also a plan where you can tour the swamp by motor boat 😊 I couldn't take a boat because I didn't have time. . . Heavy rains in northern Miyagi Prefecture 2-3 days ago caused Izunuma to flood, and the lotus flowers were submerged and damaged. Even so, there were some flowers that were working hard and blooming. There are still some buds and it looks like they will bloom in the next few days.

I had passed by the area several times, but I had never seen Izunuma itself. It seems that the lotus flowers are amazing from July to August and the lotus festival is famous, so even though that season was over, I was passing by so I decided to go there. The lotus flowers were in full bloom. Apparently, during the festival, there are excursion boats to see the lotuses. I drove around the outer periphery of Izunuma and it was huge. I knew there were a lot of wild birds, but when I went to see them this time, I was walking along the shore when a large white bird just flew away. I didn't know if it was a swan or a heron. If you go in winter, you'll probably see a lot of swans.
