Honestly I’ve seen more impressive waterfalls, however the walk through the gorge itself was nice. If you want to catch a photo without the crowds, go before or after the boat rental period. Night illumination starts at 6-10pm. This was taken at 6:45pm (night photos are filtered ☺️) Came here before going to get my seat for Kagura - they open at 7pm. Seats are first come first serve Added the daytime photos too

There's only one walkway to see the full extent of the falls from, but it's a nice view nonetheless. It's possible to see them from the bridge to the parking lot, as well.

This is really pretty, but it wasn’t really worth it to be honest. I had to park at the Takachiho-jinja Shrine and walk almost a kilometre along the road to get there. There is no parking on site. The road is a steep winding road down the gorge with no provisions for pedestrians. Admission was free, but I ended up spending 700 yen to get a taxi back to the shrine because it was so steep, hot, and dangerous to walk along. There were a lot of people there and only a handful of vantage points, so people weren’t very patient. Add to that the fact that it took two hours to drive there from Oita, and it quickly lost its appeal. Another tourist attraction lacking infrastructure that has become a victim of its own success. This place is not accessible for the mobility impaired. There are toilets and a few small shops nearby to buy a drink / souvenir. You can rent a boat to get close, but after watching the conduct of some of them from above, I decided against it.

Wonderful scenery at the middle of the Manai mountains, Japanese government is well taking care of the tourists attractions.
