Swap romantic for just plain scenic and you've got a 30 min train ride through some gorgeous scenery looking down onto the river below. At least a third of the trip I would say is tunnels which are still exciting to go through. Buy in advance 100%. We opted for car 5 which is open air which adds to the experience. Decent value also. Would get a different view in every season also. When you board they want to see the original qr booking code, not a photo of it.

Highly recommend buying tickets in advance (absolutely if you are with a group) as it’s a much better experience to have a window seat. You can do so online or go in person (such as buying tickets hours in advance and exploring the amazing food shops nearby). I bought my tickets and boarded at the Sago stop, took the train all the way to the end and took the same train back. I got off at Ariyashima stop which is in the middle of the bamboo grove and this train stop was so lovely so I definitely recommend this. I walked from there to the temples & preserved street. Train conductors and staff are extremely friendly.

Tickets you can get at the counter. Buy even # seats (2/4/6 etc) for better view or standing space since you can move side to side. Yes, it gets busy. It's high season for tourists. Yes, it gets hot. Japan is 45 C right now... But its still a beautiful view and I'd do it again with my partner and baby. And for those complaing about the seats... 1. Japan is not for the obese.. everything here is miniature sized. 2. The seats are normal. I'm a bigger guy and had no issues fitting or being comfortable on the train. 3. This is a classical train. They're not going to destroy classic aspects of a train to accommodate someone bigger... if you need more space, buy 2 tickets for yourself.

Lucky to walked in and got a ticket for this ride. Such a lovely experience. Nature at its best! Its around 25mins ride each way with beautiful scenery. Great value for money! You can also opt to take one way and get off at Kameoka. Take a walk at the town with farm views and local cafes. Take Jr line on the way back to Kyoto.

Beautiful views. Make sure you book in advance ! We saw lots of people think they could just move seats around once they were on but the train usually gets full. We went on a very hot 36 degree day, the carriages don’t have aircon but the wind provides a nice relief. Loved having our train guide sing for us at the end of the ride. It’s about a 10 min walk to the local train station home however it’s all in the sun ! No shade.
