I’ve going often JYAKUSHIN-Big Tree. I saying it “Tree of TOTORO” One plant had kept an eye on the longing times and am still alive today. I think It's better for people to live staring at trees. But people and rich man ,company and government only thinks money and economy Do not try to make the more Green … It is sad time. If you going there you can talk the nature! And You get deep breath and shining and swinging Greens ! Please try ! Near the JR UEKI station . Walking about 30min !

Great park for running around. The 400 year old tree is truly magnificent, absolutely huge. We came for a hanami picnic and had a great time. Really great that there are toilets too.

The name Jakushin comes from a person named Genshoken Jakushin. Its founder was Sadanori Miike, who became the head of Kanagogi-sho on the orders of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and after his appointment, he called himself the Kanagogi clan, taking the name of the place he was assigned to. The name that the 10th generation Kanagogi Mikawakami Okinori took after entering the temple was Genshoken Jakushin. He seems to have been quite a man who excelled in both literary and martial arts. (From the information board) This large camphor tree is a designated natural monument of Kumamoto Prefecture, with a trunk circumference of 13.3m and a height of 29m. The tree is approximately 800 years old. It is a very beautiful sacred tree that is neat and well-proportioned. It is said that Jakushin's grave is wrapped around its base, so it is called "Jakushin-san's Camphor." With its beautiful roots and the appearance of a forest, even though it is just a single tree, it is easy to see how it gently embraces the local people and makes them love it very much. This is a sacred tree that I really wanted to see.

Visited on a weekday afternoon in May 2024 Kusunoki is overwhelmed! Amazing 👍 The following is an excerpt from the Kumamoto City Tourism Division website. ************** This large camphor tree is a designated natural monument of Kumamoto Prefecture, with a trunk circumference of 13.3m and a height of 29m. The tree is said to be about 800 years old. During the Sengoku period, Chikazu Kanokogi, who was a senior vassal of the Kikuchi clan and became the lord of Kumamoto Castle, which is said to be located on the south side of present-day Kumamoto Castle, was later named Jakushin. It came to be called ``Jakushin-san's Camphor'' because it is said that the grave of a man named Jakushin is wrapped around its base. Although it is a single tree, it spreads out its branches and grows thick leaves like a forest, giving the impression that it is gently enveloping the local people and watching over them closely.
