From the front gate, go through the Moso bamboo grove on the front gate route, go to the right at the fork, and a staircase will appear. As I descended the rather steep stairs, a white marble fountain caught my eye. I was captivated by the sight of the crystal clear spring water cascading down the pale marble. There was also a toll booth near Togyokusen that was only open during the plum blossom season.

[Marble spring, pipes added later] This is a place where there has been a lot of spring water since ancient times, and the water was said to be effective against eye diseases. When creating Kairakuen, the spring water was used for the tea ceremony in the tea room Karouan, and a white izutsu was installed in consideration of the landscaping. It is called Togyokusen because it is cold even in the summer and constantly spews clear, bead-like water. The Togyokusen, which is said to have been devised by Prince Nariaki, an expert on water conservancy, has a collection tank buried several meters away from which the water is directed and discharged using a pipe. It seems that the clear water has never dried up since the time of the landscaping.
