I visited the 4th floor only, which was 430yen. The 3rd floor has special exhibitions which cost more. The exhibits on the 4th floor were wonderful. "Modern" here encompasses a century of art from what I saw. An easy hour if you just want to look at Floor 4.

Good place to spend your afternoon. The exhibition on the 4th floor comes from a wide range of era and also encompasses multiple types of art from traditional Japanese to modern pop art. Highly recommend.

Appreciation and preference in art will always depend on the eyes of the individual. However, in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Momak, it holds a very special exhibition of "Nihonga". An art style that arrived from a group of Japanese artists that were sent to Europe in an attempt to learn and understand European art and culture around 1907. It will be too lengthy to get into the history of why it does that, but the consequences are simply magnificent expressions of individualism and a beautiful marriage between european flair and Japanese roots to create works that are very tastful and unique (IMO). The photos are from the permanent collection and not from the exhibition itself, as they are now allowed. If you like art and have time on your hands, then i would highly recommend seeing it. It took us 2.30 hours to see both collections with slow pace and read most of the descriptions (English available) Venue : The Kyoto Art World Comes of Age A New Generation Takes Over from Seiho and Shoen Period : 13 Oct to 10 Dec 2023 Ticket : 2,700 JPY / Person for both permanent and special exhibition

Museum closed when i visited, so just exterior and gardens to see. Modern building a bit soul less , entrance way derivative ‘art museum’ architecture ‘homage’ perhaps to barcelona pavilion. Gardens sparse and lacking much love, and much of area given over to car parking so no interesting view from outside the boundary. Other museums around world have removed car parking to create interesting vistas for the approach.

Beautiful contemporary building. I enjoyed my very first visit to the National Museum of modern Art in Kyoto. The collection appeared to be not very extensive, but was interesting. Most of the areas didn’t allow photos, so I adhered to the rules and enjoyed what I could. Recommended if you have spare time while in Kyoto.
