When going to Fushimi-Inari-taisha Shrine by train

JR Kyoto station ➡ Fushimi-Inari-taisha Shrine

Beginning of Senbon torii (Thousand torii gates )

Before Edo period, Japan was war-torn era. There was no war and commerce developed in Edo period. Originally Fushimi-inari-taisha Shrine was God of rich harvest, but It links to prosperous business. So Fushimi-inari-taisha Shrine became a populer and a lot of merchants came and pray.

As a result , The custom of dedicating a red torii to Fushimi-inari-taisha Shrine was born to the wishes that came true. This is the beginning of Senbon torii (Thousan torii gates) .

The cheapest Torii you can devote is 175,000 yen.

Line of Thousand scarlet torii is a place that symbolizes Fushimi-inari-taisha.There are many people who take a picture, and holidays may be crowded so that passage is difficult.

 

There are other places where there is a torii line. If there are a lot of people and you don’t have time enough, you can skip.  You can tour relatively slowly on weekdays and early mornings.

Fushimi-inari-taisha, which is known as “Inari-san” is the main shrine of Inari Shrine, which has about 30,000 companies nationwide. It was build in 711. “Prosperous business” , “wish for the safety of your family” are said to be of benefit, and there are many worshipers all year round.

You can find statues of fox at not only Fushimi inari shrine but also inari shrines all over the country.Foxes are messengers of Inari god.The statue of fox with rice stalk is a symbol of huge harvest. Inari god is of agriculture.The handscroll represents wisdom.The ball represents the virtue of Inari god and the key the wish for acquiring the virtue.

・Omokaru-ishi ( Heavy-or-light stone)

At first, you are supposed to make a wish in mind in front of the lantern. Then hold up the stone on the lantern.If the stone is lighter than you expected, your wish will come true soon.If you feel it’s heavy, unfortunately your wish will take time to come true or it won’t come true.

・Oyama-meguri

If you go to Fushimi-inari-taisha Shrine, you should climb the mountain, not just seeing Senbon torii. Climbing Mt. Inari is called “Oyama- meguri”. 

The trail way is 4km long. It takes about 2 hours to walk around. On the way of Oyama-meguri, you will find many little shrines, and each one gives you a different kind of benefit.

You should go there with comfortable shoes and clothes to walk and bring some water.

They are preparing freshly-baked soba and Cha-soba and Dashi every morning. 

They take plenty of time for dashi to brings out the best of each ingredient, and produce a good quality broth with rich and savory taste (umami).  The sweet and mild dashi are

specifically made to go well with our homemade soba, cha-soba,and udon noodles.

・SENBON INARI

This shop is in Fushimi-inari-station yard.  A “Inari Sushi” specialty shop and only take-out.

There are various types of Japanese sushi suchi as “Nigiri Sushi”, “Maki Sushi” ,”Chirashi-Zushi”, “Inari Sushi”. One of those “Inari Sushi” is very popular food. 

Basically, it also features no meat or fish. Taste is sweetened, but you can feel great taste

of Soy sauce and Dashi.

This shop has a lot of type of menu. (Some mune is using meat or fish, so if you care those ingredients, please ask shop staffs. )  Some “Inari-Sushi” menu is change in keeping with the season.

・HOUGYOKU DO

You can get  “Fox face Senbei” in this shop. 

Around Fushimi-Inari, there are several stores selling Senbei with a face of fox, but this shop is the oldest and even now one by one hand-baked. It’s quite savory, it feels like the smell of soy sauce opened the package before eating. Sweetness which does not come out only with soy sauce, but it’s not sugar….. Basically it taste like “Mitarashi-Dango(rice dumpling in a sweet soy sauce)” and very elegant. You can buy “ Suzu-Senbei ”. It is kind of fortune cookie. “Suzu-Senbei” often sold out after lunch. So if you want to get, please visit before lunch.

There are many tourists from overseas, so it is an area where language support is progressing.Wear a yukata or kimono and take a photo in front of the Senbon-torii.

The early morning time on weekdays is recommended because there relatively few people.
