Thing of the glamour of Faihouon-Ji Temple

①National treasure building and beautiful landscape at precinct.

Daihouonn-Ji Temple was built in 1221. It is called “Senbonshaka Do” and this temple has a historic temple with a long history. The main hall is intact also miraculously the temple was not attacked during the Onin no ran(Onin-war) and Bunmei no ran(Bunmei-war). As the oldest building in Kyoraku is designated as a national treasure.

〜Shidare sakura in spring〜

There is a large weeping cherry tree known as “Okame sakura(阿亀桜)”in the center of Daihouon-Ji Temple and the tree will bloom in early spring.

“Okame(阿亀)” is a woman who suicide while thinking strongly of her husband. I will tell a story later.

②A treasure trove of buddha statue as important cultural properties.

The main hall designated as a national treasure and the statues of famous Buddhist sculptors representing the Kamakura period. There are many great Buddhist statues as a temple treasure that should be called Japanese treasures.

“Honzon Shakanyorai” produce by Gyokai(行快), “Judaideshi zo” produced by Kaikei(快慶)、”Rokkannonbosatsu” produced by Teikei(定慶) etc,  many Buddha sculptures are important cultural properties.

〜Judaideshi statue(十代弟子像)〜

Ten old and young monks selected from the Buddha’s disciples are called “Judaideshi”, they are often expressed in sculptures and paintings. The statue of “Judaideshi” were carved to stand up to the Buddha, each image of 90cm to 100cm in height is stored almost completely.

〜Rokkannon-statue(六観音像)〜

Rokkannon mean “Sho(聖)”, “Senju(千手)”, “Bato(馬頭)”, “Juichimen(十一面)”, “Junten(准胝)”,”Nyoirin(如意輪)”. It is very rare that life size six Kannnon images remain.

③The place of origin “Okame(plain-looking woman)”

Daihouon-Ji Temple is said to benefit from “Okame Zuka” in the precincts, “Married” ,”Children”,”Happy marriage”.

“Okame” is a wife of a carpenter who served as a master of the main building. When he mistakenly cut an important column dimension and cut it too short, Okame advised that it should be supplemented by Masugumi. But she thought that it is a shame for my husband to be told that he has done a big job with the wisdom of a woman who is not an expert then she committed suicide.

When I hear the story, I felt that it is the ultimate love and typical Japanese culture of “Otoko wo tateru (Japanese women willing to make man look good among other people)”.

Okame might be very kind and attentive woman. Her fluffy smile conveys a bright personality to us now.
